Anxiety and OCD Therapy in Phoenix, AZ
What is anxiety and how is it treated?
Anxiety boils down to fear. Sometimes, anxiety helps us stay safe or focused. But when that anxiety takes over our lives, making it hard to eat, sleep, maintain work and relationships - it’s time to take a different approach.
Anxiety may look like:
Generalized Anxiety Disorder - a general sense of fear/worry that permeates many areas of life
A Specific Phobia - intense fear of one or a handful of specific things
Social Anxiety - anxiety specific to social interaction
Panic Disorder - panic attacks and the fear of recurring panic attacks
Some of the ways I help folks navigate anxiety and related diagnoses include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Existential Therapy
Creative therapies like art, nature and animal assisted
Psychodynamic Therapy
Trauma therapies as needed where some presentation of anxiety is linked to underlying trauma. These may include EMDR, IFS, or Brainspotting.
What is obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and how is it treated?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is also rooted in fear and a desire for control to manage that fear.
OCD asks the question “what if” about the things you care most about and tries to convince you that improbabilities are the truth.
OCD is comprised of a cycle of obsessive thoughts (rooted in a core fear), leading to anxiety, leading to compulsive behavior to try to reduce the anxiety, which unfortunately only leads to reinforcing the anxiety even more.
The treatment of choice for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP), which is a specific type of CBT therapy. It is often very effective for folks struggling with OCD because it interrupts the OCD cycle.
I have completed ERP training with the International OCD Foundation and exclusively use this modality to support folks in managing OCD symptoms.
